[1968] Lollipop Shoppe - Underground Railroad

Checking out the Lollipop Shoppe's first and only album "Just Colour" was first surprising and then a bit disappointing. The best track on this album is indeed "Underground Railroad". It's a very strong song, a bit dark and maybe even acherontic. A hint of oriental melodies combined with bassy Jefferson Airplane sound and garagy trashing drums and voices. It's just great!

[1968] Merrell Fankhauser & H.M.S. Bounty - A Visit With Ashiya

Merrell Fankhauser is mainly known from his work on Fapardokly debut and his recordings with the group MU. Since 1973 he had been living at Maui Island, Hawaï. Merrell: "After Mu broke up I went solo and moved deeper into the Maui rainforest, to study the Lost Continent and ancient Hawaiian history, that in itself is a mystical experience. Living 25 miles out in the jungle next to a free flowing stream by a waterfall can be very enlightening. When you don't have electricity or TV and you hear all the sounds of nature with no man made sound to pollute your mind you become aware and inspired in a new way. I was living with my girlfriend, violinist Mary Lee, and we stayed pretty much to a vegetarian diet, I did eat quite a bit of fresh fish, as it is so good in Hawaii. We played many places as a duo and had a steady gig at a club in Kahului for about 6 months."

[1968] Neighb'rhood Childr'n - Chocolate Angel

I don't know, why it took me so long to discover this great band! on their debut album from 1968 they combine the early Jefferson Airplane sound with that of the psychedelic songs from the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Also a heavy load Psychedelic Folk-Rock rythmns mashed up by Garage Rock. The song you can listen to above is a nice example for their sound (totally stoned!!). Get the complete album if you can!

Two years after the band was found in Minneapolis in 1966, a live set got recorded and released in 1999 by the Arf!Arf! label in combination with their 1967 album "Distortions". This track really grooves and is ffor now the most psychedelic track I have heared by this garage rock band. the organ is played in that mystic style and the way they are using their electric guitars just reminds of the Doors. Highly recommended!

Along withthe song "Country Life", this one was released by Blonde on Blonde on their 1968 single. Nice Ragas with Sitar and tabla, but it seems, like the band was gettin' bad, the older they grew. so let's enjoy this pre-debut album song.

Jay Siegal of The Tokens produced the first and only LP they made. the band real name is "The Fabulous Four", but the labels and manager changed their name several times, here they changed it to "The Next Exit". On garagehangover.com and rockkansas.com you can read a bit about the whole story of this great band :). This song has groovy overdubbed singing. Psychedelic pop with a touch acid.

"In 1967 the group landed a great opportunity to travel New York to record "I'm the Only One" and "Break Away" as the Next Exit for Warner Bros, produced by the Tokens. Bob Theen: This song was recorded in NY in 1967, produced by The Tokens. It was supposed to be the title song for a movie that was released that next year in 1968 called “Butterflies Are Free’ The movie did come out it ‘68 but for some reason unknown to us our recording was not chosen. The song "I'm The Only One" was in the movie but only one short verse was sung by one of the stars on an acoustic. Darn the luck!! The other side of this is "Breakaway".

Our version of the song was released in the spring of 1968 and got some air play here in K.C. MO. Don't know about anywhere else. But evidently it wasn't a smash hit.

I still have a letter from Hank and Jay asking us to return to NY for some more recordings but for some reason at the time the trip was too far. I still wonder to this day why we didn't go. I think it had something to do with our families, wives, babies and that sort of thing.
